DanceSport Competition
July 5-6, 2008

The Ft. Wayne chapter of USA Dance held it very first dance sport competition on July 5th and 6th. In addition to being their first competition it was also the first ever Special Olympics Dance competition. Special Olympics, Indiana provided dance shoes for each of the Special Olympian participants. Members of the Ft. Wayne USA Dance Chapter volunteered as dance partners and practiced for at least ten weeks with their Special Olympics partner. Proceeds from the Saturday night’s semi-formal dance will be donated to next year’s Special Olympic program.

Bluegrass Chapter members Jenna Geren and her partner Jack Geren competed in this competition. Because Jenna was not an Indiana resident she was not eligible to participate in the Special Olympics portion of the competition. She and her father danced in the Newcomers mixed proficiency category. The organizer of the Special Olympics competition, Vivian Hans, asked Jenna to perform an honor dance at the semi-formal ball on Saturday evening. Jenna and Jack preformed a waltz to the song “Let There Be Peace On Earth”, after the first stanza all the special Olympic competitors joined in the dance. It was a very moving experience for the spectators and there were very few dry eyes in the audience.

If you would like to look at the entire article on this competition you can view it on the Fort Wayne Dancespoot website. Their August newsletter has the article about the competition.
